When it comes to housing your electronics project, you've got two main paths: grab something off the shelf, or have it made to your specs. Both have their place — here's how to decide which is right for your build.

What Off-the-Shelf Enclosures Do Well

Standard enclosures are fast, cheap, and proven. If your project fits a common form factor — a DIN rail module, a standard desktop box, or a wall-mount housing — an off-the-shelf option is hard to beat. They're typically made from ABS or aluminium, come pre-drilled or blank, and are available in bulk.

The catch? You're designing your project around the enclosure, not the other way around.

Where 3D Printed Enclosures Win

Custom 3D printed enclosures flip that equation. You design the enclosure around your project — exact cutouts for your connectors, mounting bosses in the right spots, integrated cable routing channels, and a form factor that fits your space perfectly.

This matters most when:

  • Your PCB or component layout is non-standard
  • You need panel-mount connectors, switches, or displays in specific positions
  • You're building a one-off prototype or small production run
  • Branding or aesthetics are important (custom logos, labels, surface finish)

Material Considerations

Most functional enclosures are printed in PETG or ASA — both offer good impact resistance, reasonable heat tolerance, and are suitable for indoor and light industrial environments. For higher-temp applications (near motors, in engine bays, or outdoor installs), ASA is the better choice. PLA is fine for prototyping but not recommended for anything that'll see heat or UV exposure.

When to Combine Both

A common approach is to use a standard enclosure as the base and 3D print custom panels, brackets, or inserts. This gives you the structural rigidity and EMI shielding of a metal box with the flexibility of custom geometry where it counts — particularly useful for front panels with complex cutout patterns.
