A monitor arm can make a desk look clean right up until the screen moves and exposes a loop of HDMI, power and USB leads hanging behind it. Knowing how to route monitor cables properly means planning for movement as well as appearance. A cable run that looks tidy only when the monitor is centred is not finished.
The aim is simple: keep cables protected, out of sight where practical, easy to service and long enough to allow the monitor to tilt, swivel and lift without pulling on a port. This applies whether you are setting up one display in a home office, fitting out a workbench or building a multi-screen workstation.
Start with the monitor's full range of movement
Before attaching a single mount, move the monitor through its full travel. Raise it to maximum height, lower it, rotate it from side to side and tilt it forward and back. Watch where the rear ports sit at each position. That is the area your cable path must accommodate.
Many people route cables with the screen sitting at their preferred height, then discover the display cannot be raised without putting tension on the connectors. HDMI and DisplayPort plugs are secure enough for normal use, but they are not handles. Repeated strain can loosen a port, damage a cable or gradually pull a plug free.
Leave a controlled service loop close to the monitor. It should be large enough to move freely, but not so large that it droops below the desk or catches on the arm. For a standard adjustable arm, this is often a gentle loop following the arm's first joint rather than a tight bend directly behind the display.
Use the arm's intended cable channel first
Most monitor arms have clips, channels or removable covers along one or both sections of the arm. Use these before adding separate cable mounts. They keep the run close to the arm and stop cables shifting as the screen moves.
Do not overfill the channel. One power lead, one display cable and a slim USB lead may fit neatly, but forcing a thick bundle under a narrow cover can pinch insulation or prevent the cover from closing. If your monitor needs several connections, run only the essential moving cables along the arm and take the rest down a separate path from the desk.
Map the route from screen to power point
A clean cable route has three sections: from the monitor to the arm, from the arm to the underside of the desk, and from the desk to power and equipment. Treat each section differently rather than trying to hide everything in one large bundle.
At the monitor end, use flexible cables with sensible plug orientation. A stiff cable fighting against the back of the monitor will always look untidy and can limit adjustment. Right-angle connectors can help where a port faces down or sideways, but only if they point the cable in the required direction. A right-angle adapter that sends the lead into the monitor arm or desk is not a solution.
From the arm to the desk, run cables down the rear side where they are least visible from your seated position. Keep them clear of the arm's moving joints and tension springs. If the arm is mounted near the desk edge, make sure the cable bundle does not rub against the clamp, grommet mount or sharp metal bracket.
Under the desk, separate low-voltage signal cables from power where possible. It is not always practical to keep every cable apart, especially on compact desks, but avoiding long parallel runs beside power boards and power bricks can reduce the chance of interference. This matters more with analogue audio, unshielded gear and sensitive equipment than it does with a typical digital display connection.
Choose cable lengths for the actual installation
Extra-long cables are often bought as cheap insurance. On a fixed monitor they can be harmless, but on an adjustable arm they create bulky loops that need to be managed. Too-short leads create a worse problem: permanent tension and limited movement.
Measure with the monitor at its furthest usable position, not at rest. Start at the rear port, follow the intended route along the arm, down to the desk and across to the computer, dock or power source. Add enough length for a service loop and a little future adjustment. There is no need to add metres of spare cable just because it is available.
Cable thickness also changes the result. A heavily shielded display cable may be necessary for a demanding high-resolution or high-refresh-rate setup, but it can be harder to bend through a compact arm channel. Check the cable's bend radius and choose a quality lead that suits the route. The best cable is not automatically the thickest one.
Keep power supplies accessible and ventilated
Monitor power bricks are often the awkward part of the installation. Leaving one on the floor collects dust, gets kicked and adds a visible cable loop. Mounting it beneath the desk can improve the result, provided it remains accessible and has room to shed heat.
Do not tape a power brick tightly against carpet, soft fabric or the underside of a crowded cable tray. Avoid covering vents, crushing the output lead or creating a sharp bend where it exits the brick. If you use a mounted enclosure or holder, it needs to suit the supply's dimensions and keep the cable exit clear.
For mains leads and power boards, use products rated for the job and follow their installation instructions. Cable management should never require modifying a power lead, using damaged insulation or placing electrical equipment where water can reach it. This is particularly relevant around aquarium systems, where lighting, pumps and monitors may share a workspace but should not share an unmanaged tangle of cables.
Mount cables where they need support
Adhesive cable mounts are useful for guiding cables along a desk underside, rear panel or other clean, stable surface. They work best when used as directional supports, not as a way to suspend the full weight of several thick leads. Space them so the cable follows a natural line without pulling sideways on the mount.
Surface preparation decides whether an adhesive mount lasts. Wipe away dust, oil and polish residue, let the surface dry, then press the mount firmly into place. Give the adhesive time to bond before loading it. On powder-coated frames, textured laminate, rough timber or surfaces exposed to heat, test one location first. Adhesive performance depends heavily on the surface.
For heavier bundles, use a cable tray, screw-fixed clips or a combination of supports. A tray is particularly useful when a monitor, dock, desktop computer and chargers all meet beneath the desk. It keeps excess length contained while allowing individual leads to be changed later.
Avoid pulling cable ties excessively tight. A tie should hold the bundle in shape, not flatten it. Reusable hook-and-loop straps are a practical choice around monitor cables because they make changes easy when you replace a screen, dock or computer.
Plan for maintenance, not just the first install
A well-routed desk remains serviceable. Label both ends of similar-looking leads, especially in dual-monitor setups where two DisplayPort or HDMI cables disappear into the same tray. A small label saves time when one display stops waking or when a computer needs to be moved.
Keep a little spare length inside the cable tray rather than wrapping it tightly around a power brick. Do not bury adapters, splitters or docking connections where they cannot be reached. These are the parts most likely to need checking later.
If you regularly switch between a work laptop and personal desktop, design the route around that routine. A short, accessible lead at the front or side of the desk can be better than a perfectly hidden connection that requires reaching underneath every morning. Tidy should support how the desk is used.
A final check before calling it done
With the cables secured, move the monitor through its full range again. Look behind the screen as it rises and turns. Nothing should tighten, snag, scrape against a sharp edge or drag across the desktop. Check that plugs remain fully seated and that the arm covers close without crushing the cables.
The best monitor cable routing is usually quiet and almost invisible, but it is not about hiding every lead at any cost. Leave access where you need it, allow movement where the monitor needs it, and support the cable where its weight changes direction. That approach produces a setup that stays neat long after the first photo of the desk.
