A cable run that looks tidy on day one can become a fault-finding headache six months later if it cannot be traced, moved or serviced. It is about giving each cable a deliberate path, protecting it from strain and heat, and keeping the equipment behind it accessible.
For a home office, reef tank, workshop bench or AV cabinet, the right approach depends on the cable type, surface material and how often the setup changes. Start with the job the cable needs to do, then choose the mount, cover or routing method that suits it.
Start With the Cable Run, Not the Product
Before fitting mounts or cutting trunking, switch off equipment where practical and map the route. Identify the power source, the device, the route between them and any point where the lead may need to move. A cable that runs to a monitor arm, a removable aquarium light or a sliding drawer needs slack in the right place. A fixed power supply cable usually does not.
Separate cables into practical groups. Mains power, low-voltage DC, data, audio and lighting cables should not be treated as one bundle simply because they share a destination. Keeping power and sensitive signal cables apart can reduce interference in audio and makes later fault finding much simpler. It also prevents a single oversized bundle from becoming difficult to secure.
Measure the route with bends included. Straight-line measurements are misleading around desk legs, cabinet corners and power supplies. Leave enough length for a gentle bend radius, especially with thicker mains leads, network cable and audio cable. A cable pulled tight at a connector is one accidental knock away from damage.

There is no single cable mount that suits every build. The surface, cable diameter, load and environment determine what will stay put and what will fail early.
Desks and home offices
Under a desk, the aim is usually to get leads off the floor while retaining access to chargers, power boards and monitor cables. Adhesive cable mounts work well for light cables on a clean, smooth surface, particularly when the route is fixed and there is no constant pulling force. Clean the mounting area thoroughly first and allow adhesive to bond properly before loading it.
For a desk that is regularly moved, raised or reconfigured, use a route with service slack rather than tightly clipped leads. A small loop near a monitor arm or docking station allows movement without putting force on plugs. Keep the power board accessible and avoid enclosing adapters where heat cannot escape.
Electronics benches and DIY builds
On an electronics bench, neatness is useful only when it supports testing and repair. Route leads along edges, keep test connections visible and avoid permanently trapping cables that may need to be swapped. Cable clips and purpose-designed adhesive mounts are useful for low-voltage leads, USB cables and sensor wiring when they are positioned to prevent strain at connectors.
Power supply installations need more care. Aquariums and wet-area equipment
Cable management around aquariums is primarily a safety and maintenance issue. Salt creep, condensation and splash zones are hard on adhesives, connectors and unprotected power equipment. Keep power boards and joins away from the floor and away from areas likely to get wet. Every cable entering the cabinet should have a drip loop below the outlet or connection point, so water tracks down the cable rather than into electrical equipment.
Use mounts that keep cables organised without making pumps, lights or probes difficult to remove for cleaning. Leave enough slack to lift equipment out safely, but do not leave loose loops where they can catch on doors or sit in water. Reef lighting installations also benefit from routing cables away from heat sources and placing LED drivers where ventilation is available.
For tank-mounted lighting and accessories, check the route whenever the canopy, lid or light assembly is adjusted. A cable that clears the glass today may rub against a sharp edge after a height change. Add protection at contact points rather than relying on the outer jacket alone.
AV systems and speaker builds
Audio setups often involve a mix of mains leads, speaker cable, HDMI, Ethernet and low-level signal cable. Route speaker cable cleanly but do not crush it under tight clips or bend it sharply at terminals. Keep signal paths sensible and separate from high-current power cables where the installation allows it.
Behind a TV unit or equipment rack, make each component removable. Leave a controlled service loop and group cables by destination, not just by length. It is better to have three clearly routed bundles than one large bundle that must be dismantled to replace a single HDMI lead.
Speaker builders should also consider cable paths inside an enclosure. Internal wiring needs enough length for service, but not so much that it can contact moving components or interfere with ports. Secure it using methods suitable for the enclosure material and the operating conditions.
Select Mounting Methods With Real Loads in Mind
Adhesive mounting is quick and clean, but its limits are often ignored. Surface preparation matters as much as the mount itself. Dust, oil, textured timber, powder-coated steel and warm surfaces can all reduce adhesion. Adhesive mounts are best for lightweight cable runs with predictable loads, not for supporting heavy power bricks or thick bundles of mains cable.
Screw-fixed mounts are generally the better choice where the load is heavier, the surface is rough, or long-term vibration is expected. They take more effort to install and leave holes, but they are more dependable in workshops, cabinets and permanent installations. If drilling is not appropriate, reduce the load and use more support points rather than expecting one adhesive mount to carry the full run.
Cable sleeves and trunking are useful when several cables share the same route. They improve presentation and reduce snagging, but they can make troubleshooting slower. Use them on stable runs, such as between a desk and a wall outlet, rather than around equipment that is frequently changed. Avoid overfilling any sleeve or channel. Crowded cables retain heat, are harder to inspect and can be difficult to remove without disturbing everything else.
Build for Service, Heat and Movement
A clean installation should be easy to maintain. Leave access to reset buttons, fuse holders, adjustment controls and labels. Do not route cables across ventilation openings or bundle them tightly around power supplies, LED drivers and amplifiers that need airflow. Good cable management protects equipment from damage, but it should never compromise thermal performance.
At each plug and connector, check for strain. The cable should approach in a natural line rather than being forced sideways or held under tension. Where a cable passes through a panel, desk opening or metal enclosure, use an appropriate grommet or edge protection. This small detail prevents gradual abrasion that may not be visible until the cable fails.
For moving equipment, test the full range of motion before finalising the route. Raise the sit-stand desk, swing the monitor arm, open the cabinet door and lift the aquarium light. Watch where cables tighten, scrape or droop. Adjusting a mount by 20 millimetres now is easier than replacing a damaged lead later.
A Practical Order of Installation
Install the largest and least flexible cables first. These set the route and determine where clearance is needed. Add power leads next, then data, audio and low-voltage cables. Finish with the lighter leads that can be clipped into the remaining space.
Do not make the result too perfect to touch. Leave intentional access points at power boards, controller areas and equipment ends. A professional-looking setup is one where a failed device can be unplugged, identified and replaced without cutting ties or pulling apart half the installation.
