LED Shade Size: How to Get the Fit Right

A reef light can have the right output, spectrum and mounting height, yet still be unpleasant to look at from across the room. The right LED shade size controls glare and light spill without interfering with the fixture’s cooling, controls or coverage. It is a small accessory, but the fit needs to be treated like part of the lighting installation rather than an afterthought.

For reef keepers, the aim is straightforward: keep light directed into the tank, reduce direct line-of-sight glare, and retain proper access to the light. A shade that is too small does very little. One that is too deep, narrow or poorly positioned can block useful output at the edges of the aquarium.

What LED Shade Size Actually Refers To

LED shade sizing is not just the outside measurement of the printed part. It is the relationship between the shade, the light body and the LED or lens area underneath it.

A correctly sized shade needs to clear the fixture housing while sitting securely around it. It must also leave room for heat vents, fan intakes, power leads, adjustment buttons and mounting hardware. On compact reef lights, these details are often close together, so a few millimetres can decide whether a shade fits cleanly or causes a problem.

The second part is the shade depth. This is the distance the shade extends below the light. Greater depth generally reduces glare more effectively, especially when the aquarium is viewed from a seated position or from the opposite side of the room. The trade-off is that deeper sides can narrow the light’s effective spread if the fixture is mounted low over the water.

Measure the Fixture Before Choosing a Shade

Do not choose a shade based only on the advertised name of the light. Manufacturers can revise housings, brackets and fan layouts across production runs. Measure the unit you have in hand, including any parts that sit proud of the main body.

Start with the external length and width of the fixture at the point where the shade will sit. Measure the widest section, not just the illuminated face. Then check the height of the housing and the position of vents, plugs and control panels.

For a reliable fit, record these five measurements:

  • the overall fixture length and width
  • the length and width of the lens or LED cluster area
  • the housing height at the shade mounting point
  • the location of vents, fans, buttons and cable exits
  • the clearance between the light and mounting arms, rails or brackets
A fitted accessory should have enough clearance to install without force. A tight press-fit may look tidy initially, but it can be difficult to remove for cleaning and may put unnecessary stress on a 3D printed part. A modest design tolerance is usually better than chasing a zero-gap fit.

Measure Around Mounting Hardware Too

Mounting arms are commonly overlooked. Some lights are held from the sides, while others use a rail, yoke or rear bracket. If the shade wraps around the housing, confirm that it will not foul the bracket through its full adjustment range.

Also consider where the power lead leaves the fixture. A shade that blocks a cable exit can twist the lead or force the light to sit off-centre. The cleanest installation is one where the cable, mount and shade work together without improvised trimming.

Matching Shade Depth to Your Tank Setup

Shade depth should suit the way the light is installed, not just the fixture model. A shallow shade is often enough where a light is mounted high above an open-top aquarium. At that height, the fixture already sits above the usual viewing angle, and a deep skirt may provide limited extra benefit.

A lower-mounted light usually benefits more from a deeper shade. This is common on smaller tanks, shallow frag systems and installations where the light is mounted close to the water for stronger intensity. The shade helps stop the LED source being visible directly from the front of the tank.

There is no universal best depth because mounting height changes the result. If a shade is very deep relative to the light height, it can cut off light travelling towards the outer edges of the aquarium. This may show up as darker front corners, reduced spread or a more obvious hotspot beneath the fixture.

Before finalising the setup, stand where the tank is normally viewed. Check from the front, sides and while seated. If the LEDs are still visible, more depth or a different viewing angle may be needed. If the tank edges look noticeably dimmer after fitting the shade, raise the light slightly or choose a shallower design.

LED Shade Size and Light Spread

A shade does not increase the total light produced by the fixture. Its job is to control where that light is seen. By reducing sideways spill, a well-sized shade can make an aquarium setup feel less harsh and more contained, particularly in a living area or office.

The practical question is whether the shade blocks light that should reach the tank. This depends on the fixture’s lens angle, its height above the water and the tank footprint. Wide-angle lenses need more room to spread than narrow optics. A light mounted 300 mm above the water also needs a different shade approach to the same unit mounted 150 mm above it.

For a single central fixture over a broad aquarium, be cautious with deep shades. Edge coverage matters. For a compact cube tank, a deeper shade may be a better fit because the intended light footprint is already concentrated. Multi-light systems also need consideration, as shades can create uneven overlap if lights are mounted very close together.

Keep Cooling and Access Clear

Most quality aquarium LEDs rely on passive heatsinks, fans or both. Blocking airflow can increase operating temperature, shorten component life and make fan noise worse over time. Shade size must therefore account for the fixture’s cooling design.

Never cover fan intakes or exhaust paths. Leave clear space around vented surfaces, and do not assume a gap at one end is enough if the fixture draws air from the sides or top. If the light has a fan, listen after installation. A fan that runs harder or more often than usual may indicate restricted airflow.

Access matters as well. You should still be able to reach brightness controls, remove the power connector and clean salt spray from the housing. Reef equipment needs routine maintenance, and an accessory that turns a simple job into a dismantling exercise is not doing its job properly.

Salt, Heat and Printed Parts

Above a marine aquarium, accessories deal with heat, humidity and salt residue. Material choice and wall thickness matter, but so does sensible placement. Avoid positioning a shade where it traps moisture against the light body or receives constant splash from an uncovered tank.

Clean the shade with a soft damp cloth as part of normal tank maintenance. Do not use harsh solvents that can mark or weaken printed plastics. If salt creep builds up around the fixture, address it early rather than allowing it to accumulate around vents and electrical connections.

A Practical Fit Check Before Installation

A good final check takes only a few minutes. Fit the shade with the light switched off and confirm it sits level without bending, rubbing or covering any openings. Reinstall the light at its normal height, then inspect the tank from its usual viewing positions.

Turn the light on and look for direct glare, edge shadowing and any interference with mounts or cables. Leave the system running long enough to confirm normal cooling behaviour. This is also the time to check whether the shade has changed access to feeding lids, mesh covers or equipment mounted near the tank rim.
